Fighting online bullying with Radio 1 & Facebook

This week is National Anti-Bullying Week in the United Kingdom and we have teamed up with Facebook to support the BBC Radio 1 Bullyproof campaign. The campaign will be live for six weeks and it aims to firmly tackle the serious issue of online bullying.
Facebook hosts the BBC Bullyproof fan page as a destination for users to view videos and discuss these issues amongst other users. According to the Facebook blog, “while only a small fraction of people will ever experience abusive behavior on Facebook”, they’re “committed to promoting an environment where everyone can connect and share comfortably”.
The application built by us for Radio 1 encourages users to show their support for the Bullyproof movement by posting a badge onto their profile and their friends’ homepages with their own bespoke message.
In all our campaigns we find that users are drawn into the dialogue if they can see that their friends are actively involved and already taking it seriously. We hope that our application on Facebook will encourage young people to talk openly and honestly about on-line bullying.
